Do you suffer from oily and shiny skin?
Learn about which factors cause oily skin, and what nutrition changes you can make to help keep your skin be hydrated?
Throughout our lives our skin will go through several changes, influenced by many factors, not least fluctuating hormone levels. One of the most common skin types that many women battle with is oily or shiny skin. Did you know that your oily skin is probably dehydrated as well? We commonly associate dehydration with dry skin, but oily skin is often a sign that the skin is dehydrated, overproducing oil to compensate for the lack of moisture content in the skin. It is easy to spot the signs of oily skin; a shiny appearance with large pores and the most common mistake people make with this skin type is to use harsh products that strip the skin of its moisture content, leaving it dehydrated.
What are the main causes of oily skin?
Medically, oily skin is known as seborrhoea and occurs when excess skin oil is created in the pores due to an increase in androgens, the male hormones present in both men and women. Genetics, puberty, pregnancy and other hormonal fluctuations can all play a role in the production of sebum, leading to an oily skin type, but so can lifestyle, environmental factors and nutrition. Believe it or not, the weather can be a contributing factor to oily skin, both hot and cold. In winter, the cold, wind and low humidity can cause the skin to become dehydrated triggering the production of oil. Stress plays an important part in the condition of your skin as it causes the stress hormone cortisol to rise, which in turn causes an increase in oil production.
How can diet and nutrition help?
Revising your diet to reduce or eliminate certain food groups and types can dramatically improve an oily skin type.
For example, try avoiding the following;
Dairy – milk, butter and cheese contain high levels of hormones, which can cause an increase in the amount of oil your skin produces. Swapping to alternatives such as almond milk or feta, mozzarella or goats cheese should be considered and to ensure you are still getting enough calcium, make sure you are eating plenty of spinach, kale or almonds.
Refined Carbohydrates – white bread, rice, pasta all lose fibre and other nutrients during the refining process leading to increased blood sugar levels, which in turn increases oil production. Switching to wholemeal bread and pasta, brown rice and oats will help to stabilise your blood sugar levels and will also keep your energy levels more consistent.
Look to increase each week the following;
Essential Fatty Acids – these are indeed essential, not only for good skin health but for our bodies in general as they are the building blocks of healthy cell membranes that keep moisture in and oxidative stress out. These EFAs help to keep the skin hydrated, which as we now know, helps to reduce the overproduction of sebum that gives us oily skin. Strong cell membranes can prevent the production of glycation (sugars) in the skin thereby regulating hydration and slowing down the development of wrinkles as well as enabling the communication exchange of essential nutrients needed to get vitamin C and E from the serums creams and inside the cells. Try to introduce more oily fish and nuts into your diet like salmon, mackerel and walnuts.
What treatments are there to help?
A Biologique Recherche face treatment is tailored to suit your unique skin instants, focusing on replenishing what your skin needs. Our Natural Lift, Re-balancing and Nourishing Skin Treatment will aid the acceleration of cell renewal while restructuring, firming and hydrating skin to regulate oil production.
What can you do in-between treatments to continue with your programme at home?
A prescriptive home treatment plan plays an essential role in continuing and maintaining your clinic skin treatments. The Biologique Recherche Methodology achieves astounding effectiveness centred around a clinical approach to beauty utilising pure, concentrated raw ingredients combined with innovative and precise procedures. Oily skin treatments are all about preparation because at this stage the skin is not able to absorb serums. Biologique Recherche Cleansing Milk and hero product, Lotion P50 will help to gently cleanse the skin and remove excess oils without leaving the skin dehydrated, and lower the pH level of the skin without the need for harsh mechanical abrasion. Skin turnover is enhanced to support skin brightness, hydration and tone. Amniotique E hydrating serum can then be applied, which will leave your skin feeling intensely hydrated, smooth and relieved of tightness; perfect for frequent fliers, protection from dehydrating air-conditioning and cold weather.
What results can you expect?
A combination of clinic treatments and prescriptive homecare regime means you will see results very quickly - usually within 3-5 days.
Is there anything else I should know?
Remember that your oily skin is probably as a result of dehydrated skin, so avoid harsh cleansing products, skin peels and microdermabrasion as this will take away too much of the natural oil in the skin. We know you want to reduce the oiliness of your skin, but these treatments will leave it dehydrated and then the overproduction of oil will start all over again.
