Slow down the signs of ageing and sagging skin

It’s a fact that none of us can deny, as we get older, our skin starts to age in appearance and sag. We can’t stop our skin from getting older, but we can help to slow it down and improve its appearance. It takes time, dedication and commitment, but the results of an improved diet, positive lifestyle choices and a good skin care regime can have the desired results.

What causes our skin to age and sag?

Primarily ageing and saggy skin is due to a loss of collagen. We’ve all heard about it, but do we really know what collagen is and why we lose it? The word collagen is derived from the Greek word ‘Kolla’ which means glue; essentially collagen is the glue that holds our cells together. Over time, collagen production slows down (usually from the age of 25) and as the production of this connective protein diminishes, so does the elasticity of our skin which can result in the ageing and saggy appearance our skin takes on as we age. Once the menopause is upon us, the reduction in this collagen increases and this is when we can really begin to notice the changes in our skin. But a reduction in collagen is not the only factor that can cause our skin to age and sag. Body fat can help to support the skin’s structure and give it a plumper appearance. Dramatic weight loss, especially as we get older, could result in the skin having a sagging appearance as the lack of elasticity that comes with age means ‘stretched’ skin no longer has the ability to snap back into shape.

How can you improve the appearance of ageing and saggy skin?

Environmental factors play a large part in the appearance of our skin, especially when it comes to how well it ages. Ok, so some of you reading this blog are going to think that it’s a bit like closing the stable door once the horse has bolted as the damage has already been done, but it is even more important the older we get to protect your skin from environmental damage to slow down the ageing process. Ultraviolet rays have to be the number one enemy when it comes to hampering the collagen production process. The sun’s UV rays can damage these precious proteins in our skin causing them to breakdown which leads to sagging skin. Wearing a high factor sun protection cream with a 4 or 5 star UV rating is essential, and not just when we are sunbathing, but on a daily basis when we are out and about and the sun’s UV rays can have an effect on the skin. Between the months of April to September in the UK, the sun’s rays can affect our skin, especially when the sun is highest in the sky between 11am and 3pm.

What treatments are there to help improve the appearance of ageing and saggy skin?

Our HIFU facial is a non-invasive alternative to a surgical facelift and can help to tighten the neck, jawline, jowls and eyes by delivering a direct increase in temperature to the skin. This increase in temperature penetrates energy to the lower dermis which causes a thermal trauma to the skin which stimulates the body’s natural inflammatory response to produce more fibroblasts that will initiate the production of elastin and collagen in the skin. It is a comfortable, safe and efficient treatment for firming and toning the face and neck. Combine this HIFU facial with a Biologique Recherche facial treatment for your ‘Skin instant’ and the results can be extremely effective.

What products can I use to maintain my skin once I have had the treatment?

The Biologique Recherche philosophy of skin instants means that you can match the exact products to your own personal skin condition. We recommend a combination of Serums, VG Tensil, Splenodermine and Serum Matriciel that all help towards regenerating and firming the skin’s supportive tissues. Everyone’s skin is different and a personally tailored prescription of products for an ‘at home’ skin care regime will be recommended.

What results can I expect?

The combination of a course of HIFU treatments with the Biologique Recherche facial can have excellent results. Many people can see an instant change in the appearance of their skin with the full potential of the treatment, combined with a home care routine, being evident in between 2-12 weeks. It is essential that from here on in you keep your skin hydrated, as well as your body, you stick to your skin care regime and protect your skin from environmental factors, especially UV rays and focus on reducing refined sugars in your diet. We recommend that you have a HIFU facial treatment every 12 weeks (so 4 times a year) to achieve the optimum results.
